Attorney General Chakaka to up the ante on alleged errant lawyers on June 3

AG Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda

Malawi’s spirited Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, it has emerged, instructed a senior advocate in the Ministry of Justice, Clement Maulidi, to pray to the Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda, to adjourn a court session where the AG wants twelve lawyers to be disbarred from practicing law in the country for unethical conduct.

Maulidi told the Chief Justice that Chakaka Nyirenda is out of the country for official duties and gave him strict instructions to pray to the court to have the case adjourned as he wants to personally handle the case when he is back to which the Chief Justice yielded to the prayer.

On this crusade to sanitize the legal profession, the Attorney General has already secured one disbarment of a Lawyer whom the Chief Justice found guilty of embezzling  client’s money.

The remaining twelve lawyers who may possibly carry the cross of shame include Lawyer Nicely Msowoya and Julius Nyambo.

Counsel Msowoya said he expects the court to hear the preliminary objections that he has indicated that he will raise during the hearing.

Clients in Malawi have for a long time been defrauded of funds by unscrupulous counsels who have been going scot-free because the country did not have a passionate Attorney General to protect the public as the former AGs were bent on protecting or shielding their own by paying a blind eye to clients’ complaints.

However, the tide has changed against such unethical lawyers with the coming on the scene of Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda as Attorney General who took over from former Attorney General Chikosa Silungwe whom some quarters were accusing of misfiring.

“Now institutions in the country are working for the betterment of the citizenry,” said analyst Joel Tonde who encouraged Malawians to rally behind the noble work being executed by the incumbent Attorney General.
