Airtel Malawi says mobile money fraud reduction gone down

Phone calls are made, the callers purporting to be employees from either one of the two mobile companies in Malawi, Airtel and Tnm, telling the unsuspecting person on the other end of the call that they have won some prize and that they need further details. The script is professionally run such that some unsuspecting Malawians end falling for the trap, revealing their mobile money pin codes and eventually having their mobile money from their phone accounts stolen. This has been the order of the day.

However, Airtel Malawi has disclosed that cases of mobile money fraud have gone down in the year 2022, as compared to previous years. This has been disclosed in Lilongwe Wednesday by the Head of marketing for Airtel Money Virginia Jere during the weekly draw for the just launched ‘Agent Asanje Promotion’.

According to Jere, her Company, Airtel Malawi, has tirelessly been working with the Malawi Police Service and other relevant stakeholders to curb the vice.

Speaking on the promotion, Jere disclosed that 40 agents will be winning K20, 000 each every week, while K300, 000 will be up for grabs to each of 56 Airtel Money agents every month.

The grand price in the promotion, which ends on February 6, 2023, is one million Kwacha for four lucky Airtel Money agents.
