MCP yet to sanction campaign for NEC positions

Mkaka and Chimwendo must go unopposed

In a conspicuous display of orderliness in stark contrast to the tumultuous situation unfolding within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the ruling Malawi Congress Party has unequivocally asserted that it has yet to signal the commencement of campaigns for the National Executive Committee (NEC) positions within the party.

Eisenhower Mkaka, the party’s secretary general, communicated to all NEC members and regional chairpersons in August of the previous year, emphasizing the prohibition of campaigning for any NEC position. He went on to articulate that the NEC is anticipated to convene and issue comprehensive guidelines on all matters pertaining to the upcoming convention scheduled for August 2024.

Despite this, in April of the same year, the party’s NEC formally endorsed Chakwera as its torchbearer for the 2025 Presidential Election. From May onward, Chakwera garnered a series of endorsements from prominent leaders within the party, including Cabinet ministers and district chairpersons, particularly from the Northern and Central regions.

The initial declaration was made by the party’s second vice-president, Harry Mkandawire, followed by Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani-Hara and Lilongwe Msinja North legislator Bintony Kutsaira.
