The centre is not holding and things are falling apart in the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as like in Zambia’s Patriotic Front, the party would be on the verge of slipping out from the hands of the octogenarian Peter Mutharika to other crop of leaders because of his propensity to disregard the rule of law in the country.
The High Court made it very clear that there was a power vacuum in the DPP so much so that it directed the party to hold a national convention in order to elect new office bearers to guide the party within 90 days of its judgement as the mandate for the ones currently holding the positions already expired.
However, Peter Mutharika as we all know him, has no respect for the law, despite being a one-time constitutional law professor. The rival group led by the Secretary General of the Party Grizelda Jeffrey is today holding a National Governing Committee (NGC) meeting of the party which has been duly sanctioned by the Court.
23 bonafide members of the NGC out of 72 have shown up to the meeting and the meeting has elected Lawmaker Cecelia Chazama to chair the meeting. Meanwhile, Journalists have been ordered out of the meeting for the senior party gurus to discuss with a promise that they would be addressed on what they will agree.
