109 Asylum Seekers Return to Burundi from Malawi’s Dzaleka Camp

Heading back to Burundi

The Ministry of Homeland Security, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has successfully facilitated the voluntary repatriation of 109 Burundian nationals from Dzaleka camp.

Patrick Botha, the Public Relations Officer for Homeland Security, expressed contentment with the second phase of the repatriation effort. He emphasized that repatriation is a significant and lasting solution for managing refugees in the country.

Rehema Miiro, the UNHCR Durable Solutions Officer, affirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting the Malawi government in its asylum seeker repatriation initiatives. She also mentioned that over $120,000 was allocated for the operation. The repatriation will, among other benefits, help alleviate the congestion at Dzaleka Refugee Camp, which has seen its population grow to over 50,000 over the years, as reported by UNHCR.
