Malawi Prison Service moves HQ from Zomba to Lilongwe

Zomba Central Prison

In a move reminiscent of the Malawi Electoral Commission’s earlier shift, the Malawi Prison headquarters is relocating from its former base in Zomba to the national capital, Lilongwe. Chimwemwe Shawa, the National spokesperson for prisons, has confirmed this development, revealing that the Ministry of Lands has allocated two floors at Magalasi House for this purpose.

Shawa emphasized that the relocation is crucial for cost-saving since senior officers often had to make frequent trips to the capital for essential matters.

While some voices argue that these shifts, be it from Zomba to Lilongwe or from Blantyre to Lilongwe, risk diminishing the significance of these cities, it’s evident that the government’s primary aim is to streamline operations and minimize costs in administrative transactions.
