President Lazarus Chakwera expressed Malawi’s resolute commitment to partnering with the Brics coalition of emerging global economies in order to advance multilateralism and reinforce international legality within an improved and fresh framework. He communicated this stance recently during the 15th Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (Brics) Plus Outreach Summit, which concluded in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In his inaugural speech to the summit, the President stated that Malawi stands ready to cooperate with Brics in addressing historical obstacles that have marginalized Africa’s participation in worldwide prosperity. These challenges encompass deficiencies in establishing institutional and financial systems for intra-continental trade, as well as the dominance that certain nations exert over multilateral organizations like the United Nations Security Council.
He Said: “In the face of these global challenges, Malawi is determined to work with Brics nations to promote multilateralism and uphold international law in a new and better framework.
“We must reboot the system. We must reboot it now. And we are here to help Brics nations design the software.”
Chakwera also remarked that this year’s Brics discussions were particularly timely for nations in the Global South, some of which continue to grapple with the successive global challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the repercussions of climate change, and the conflict in Ukraine.
The President wrapped up his participation in the Brics agenda by holding a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During this interaction, Chakwera conveyed Malawi’s appreciation for the consistent and invaluable support extended by the Chinese Government. Specifically, he highlighted China’s decision in the past year to forgive a non-interest loan totaling K5.5 billion owed by the Malawi Government. This action was a testament to Beijing’s dedication to fostering stronger economic relations with Lilongwe.
