The unveiling of a completed rehabilitation and expansion of the Kamuzu Dam 1 by President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday, August 8 attracted officials and members of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) as the event also included a development rally.
Notable National Executive Committee officials for the ruling party who accompanied the State President to the commissioning ceremony include the MCP Secretary General Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, MCP’s acting Spokesperson Ezekiel Peter ching’oma, Minister of Local Government Honourable Richard Chimwendo Banda, Minister of Water and Member of Parliament for Chikwawa Mkombezi Abida Mia among others.
The event took place at Malingunde which is situated in Lilongwe Nsinja South constituency. Member of Parliament responsible for the area, Francis Belekanyama, was among the officials who spoke at the development rally ahead of the President’s keynote address.
While the President’s speech focused on the on matters surrounding the water project which was being commissioned, other officials speaking took advantage of the event’s nature as development rally to touch on other developmental issues necessary for the president’s attention as well as the attention of the audience.
In his speech, Belekanyama praised President Chakwera for impressive delivery on last year’s AIP program in the area.
“In this constituency, only about 35 people used to benefit from the fertilizer subsidy program. But last year, things were completely different and entirely impressive”, Belekanyama remarked asserting that;
“Over 31, 000 people benefited from the AIP program in this constituency during the last farming season. These people gathered here can testify to that. For this achievement, we would like to thank you your excellency”, said Belekanyama.
The parliamentarian, however, proceeded to complain that late delivery of the fertilizer was the only challenge which must be overcome this year. “The only issue which these people complained about is late arrival of the fertilizer and they are asking for improvement in that regard this year”, he said.
