A faction has emerged in the northern region block of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that has distanced itself from the nonsense of voting for an octogenarian Peter Mutharika as the party’s candidate in the 2025 presidential election. DPP Vice President for the North Goodall Gondwe and others told the media that the North has resolved to have Peter Mutharika as its torchbearer in 2025.
However, on Thursday addressing journalists, one of the members of the group Ken Msonda said the DPP northern bloc did not meet to make such a decision. Msonda said what Gondwe and others said yesterday is their decision alone and does not represent the views of all DPP members from the North.
On his part, Chitipa South Member of Parliament Werani Chilenga, who is also a Member of the DPP’s National Governing Committee, said he is shocked by the announcement by the other faction yesterday.
The group says they are not against Mutharika contesting in the 2025 polls but says they know the former president will not contest and that is why he allowed other candidates to express interest.
Yesterday, Gondwe, Jappie Mhango, and others endorsed Mutharika at a press briefing held in Lilongwe. Peter Mutharika has been sending signals to contest in 2025 as he remains in the state of denial that Lazarus Chakwera of MCP beat him at the ballot in 2020.
