Salima-Lilongwe water project to commence following Parliament nod

Lilongwe city dwellers can now afford a sigh of relief as Parliament has given the government a go-ahead to borrow K105 billion from NBS Bank and the National Bank of Malawi for the Lake Malawi Water Supply project.

Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe said the funds will finance the abstraction and treatment of water from Lake Malawi at Lifuwu in Salima and the transportation of the treated water through a 112-kilometer transmission pipeline to Lilongwe City.

The project has for so long faced financing challenges, which saw a financier Quay Energy struggling and failing to raise the necessary financing for the project.
