Zambia, one of Malawi’s neighbors, the youthful generation when taunting each other with banter on social media call each other cousins, has sent a batch of assorted relief items towards assisting the Malawi people who have been badly hit by Tropical Cyclone Freddy devastation.
The items donated include foodstuffs, tents, chlorine, and sanitary kits for victims of Tropical Cyclone Freddy which has claimed over 300 lives and displaced over 40 000 households in the Southern Region.
Landing at Kamuzu International Airport, Zambian’s High Commissioner to Malawi Panji Kaunda presented the first batch of donations to Malawian authorities.
Panji said a significant lot of bulky items such as maize will be sent by road. On behalf of the Malawi government, Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda hailed the support saying it is a symbol of unity between the two countries.
Kandodo also disclosed that Zambia has committed to sending helicopters and personnel to help in the rescue missions.
Reporting on the same, the Daily Mail of Zambia further reported that the Zambian Government has donated more than 100 metric tons of maize to Malawi after the powerful Tropical Cyclone Freddy tore through the neighboring Country killing hundreds of people.
The paper said another consignment of about five metric tons of white maize has been transported to Malawi from Lusaka by Zambia Airforce plane this morning.
