Following the devastation that cyclone Freddy has caused to the Malawi nation including claiming 225 lives, the Malawi leader, Chakwera, has declared a14 days state of mourning where flags shall fly at half-mast in the first seven days. The president said this when he addressed the nation over yesterday on the disaster situation and damage containment.
“As of yesterday, the devastation has claimed 225 lives, injured 707 people, displaced over 83,000 people from 18,689 households, washed away newly planted farms, and destroyed public infrastructure like schools, health facilities, and roads in 13
districts, namely Blantyre, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje, Zomba, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Neno, Mwanza, Phalombe, Machinga, Balaka, and Mangochi,” said the President.
He continued: “In the meantime, in view of the extent of the loss of life caused by this disaster, I have directed that all of us as a nation observe 14 days of mourning and that all flags fly at half-mast for the first 7 of those days.”
What the Presidential directive means is that there will be no soccer super league soccer games or friendlies, entertainments like music shows, gigs, discos, parties in Malawi until the 14 days elapse. Shall others decide to go partying in contravention of this directive, there shall suffer opprobrium for their insensitivity like how former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnston suffered when he partied at the peak of covid-19 deaths in the UK.
