The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Sidik Mia, on Monday, inspected the interventions being implemented by the Lilongwe Water Board in Lilongwe to contain the spread of cholera in the City.
As an initiative to fight the cholera outbreak in the city, the Lilongwe Water Board developed a response strategy in collaboration with the Lilongwe City Council and the Ministry of Health. The strategy aims to mitigate the spread of Cholera in Lilongwe City, increase stakeholder collaboration at all levels as well as address issues related to water, sanitation & hygiene, and promote community participation in the management of WASH facilities in their communities.
Among other activities, the strategy looks to identify resources for provision of free water in kiosks, standardization of tariffs for the kiosks, introduction of payment plans for kiosks that are currently owing LWB, assessments on the condition of water in communal points & carry out necessary repairs, cleaning up campaigns in market and public places, disinfection of public places including Markets and intensifying law enforcement.
The activities in the strategy are targeting Lilongwe City residents in the Cholera hotspots in Area 36, Mtandile, Mtsiliza, Kauma, Mchitanjiru and Chinsapo.
