A video showing Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera performing push-ups with a little kid with a disability has gone viral on social media to the delight of both the boy and bystanders, as well as to the happiness of the entire country of Malawi.
“We have watched the video sir, this is awesome, the boy and the entire nation will always remember you for this compassion,” said Francis Nthonga.
The President joined the international community in commemorating International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day set aside to promote awareness and mobilise support for persons with disabilities. Malawi’s commemorating function took place at Masintha ground in the capital Lilongwe.
President Chakwera said that the day “reminded us of our uninterrupted obligation to support efforts that uphold the dignity, rights and improved well-being of persons with disabilities.”
This year’s commemoration was on the theme – “Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Fueling an Accessible and Equitable world” to which the President said the theme “tasks us to mainstream disability issues in all aspects of public affairs.
“My administration will continue aligning our policies and governance statutes with local, regional and global charters that promote the well-being of persons with disabilities,” said President Chakwera.
