There is something good the Catholic-owned secondary schools in the country do as this year’s Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination results indicate that they have beaten all schools in the country in terms of performance, and this includes government-sponsored secondary schools.
Releasing the results today, the Executive Director of MANEB, Professor Dorothy Nampota disclosed that out of the 147,977 candidates who sat for the 2022 MSCE examinations, 86,477 have passed, representing a 58.44% pass rate adding that this is an improvement from the 52.02% pass rate of 2021.
According to the statistics, St Kizito Seminary, Marist Secondary, Nankhunda Seminary have emerged as the first, second, and third-best performing secondary schools in the country. All these schools are run by Catholics. The top ten schools in the 2022 MSCE exams are as follows: St Kizito Seminary, Marist Secondary, Nankhunda Seminary, Lilongwe Islamic, Dedza Secondary, St Mary’s Secondary, Loyola Jesuit, Lilongwe Girls Secondary, Maranatha Boys and Wasambo Boys High School.
Malawians have reacted to this achievement by Catholic schools. Mukunuwa Phiri said, “discipline plays a very great role ….these catholic schools enforce discipline unlike government schools where students are busy demonstrating and discos.”
“Missing in action are CCAP-managed secondary schools, they need to put their act together and bring back the lost glory,” said Emmanuel Chanza.
Disclosing further details, MANEB stated that the top ten best-performing education districts in descending order are as follows: Zomba Urban 68.43%, Likoma 66.67%, Dowa 65.67%, Phalombe 64.45%, Mzuzu City 63.71%, Dedza 63.11%, Karonga 61.87%, Mulanje 61.12%, Ntchisi 60.98% and Nkhatabay 60.20%.
