The Malawi Police have delivered a letter of apology to the student leader of the University of Malawi, Charles Dokera, following the sporadic firing of teargas canisters in the student’s hostels thereby suffocating students with disabilities in the process.
“On behalf of the Eastern region police management and indeed on my own behalf, I write to offer my unreserved apology for the use of teargas by the police within the campus of the University of Malawi in Zomba on 23rd September 2022 when running battles ensued between police and the students in the aftermath of the latter delivering their petition to the office of District Commissioner of Zomba,” reads the letter in part.
It concludes:
“Following this incident, the Eastern Regional Police Management will institute measures to ensure that incidents of similar nature should never happen again within UNIMA Campus.”
