The Malawi Red Cross Society with support from the European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection has distributed relief items to 190 households whose houses were damaged by stormy rains last week.

Malawi Red Cross Society has also mounted two tents as make shift classes at Mlonyeni Primary School in Senior Chief Mlonyeni’s area and at Ntonda Primary school in T/A Nyoka where roofs of some classroom blocks were blown off during the hailstorm.

The people affected were in the seven Traditional Authorities of Mavwere, Mlonyeni, Nyoka, Gumba, Matuwamba,Kawere and Simphasi.

Speaking during the distribution of relief items on Friday morning at Mlonyeni Primary School, Senior Chief Mlonyeni commended Malawi Red Cross Society for coming to their rescue.

“What happened here was very strange. All along we thought disasters only happen in lake districts or hilly areas, but now these things affect everyone. Hundreds of families are now destitute in many of my villages, but I thank Red Cross of coming to our rescue,” said Mlonyeni.

A Representative from Mchinji District Council Judith Mbuna said Malawi Red Cross Society remains a key partner in disaster issues, as this is not the first time it has provided such a relief in the district.

She said her office will continue collaborating with MRCS for continued support as many parts of the district have reported disasters.

Malawi Red Cross Society representative Data Team Lead Gumbi Gumbi says the humanitarian organisation is fully prepared to respond to disasters in this year of 2022.

“As Malawi Red Cross Society, we are geared to respond to disasters. MRCS started preparations for this year’s disaster response as soon as the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services announced the 2021/2022 seasonal forecast,” said Gumbi.

The 190 households have received Taurpulins, Shelter Kits, Kitchen set and blankets from MRCS while the Department of Disaster and Management DODMA distributed bags of maize and rice.
