President Chakwera has switched on the 60 megawatts JMC solar power facility valued US$75 million (around K60 billion) in salima today.

Speaking on media tour after switching on the country’s first independent power producer scheme, he said his vision is to have multiple of such projects in order to end shortage of electricity in the country.

“I have inaugurated the 60 Megawatt JCM Solar Power Plant in Salima today. Malawi’s first independent power producer scheme. This solar park is using PV panels to feed into the grid.

“I announced that my Administration is developing the first-ever Renewable Energy Act, which will help us better regulate the sector and reduce systemic inefficiencies,” said Chakwera.

The Malawi leader has further invited committed investors in the energy sector to leverage off the present opportunities in the country and work with the Government in the realisation of the aspirations in the country’s development blueprint, Malawi 2063.

He also said attributed the delay to complete the project to some bureaucracies and has called for patriotism and hard work of home grown investment.

“Now under my administration, the work has been completed, this kind of sustained political stability is critical for investment, security and my administration is committed to keep Malawi a land of peace ,” he said.

Group village headman Kanzimbe said they are optimistic that the company will fulfill its promises and commitment to better develop the lives of people in his area and Malawi .

The solar park has 280 thousands solar panels which will be connected to national grid.
