DPP/AFORD Caught in Broad Daylight – The Tax Evasion Shame That Reminds Us of Their Rotten Past

When thieves return to the scene of the crime, it is not because they are brave but because stealing has become their second nature. This week, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) exposed yet another shameful scandal—goods imported from South Africa through Dedza Border using falsified documents, all in the name of hiding the true culprits: AFORD and the DPP.

The suspect, a clearing agent named Rhoda Ndovie, was only a pawn in the dirty chessboard of these opposition parties. Investigations show that the paperwork was doctored to replace AFORD/DPP with her name and her small businesses. Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, they tried to disguise their goods, but the smell of corruption cannot be hidden. The result? A shocking attempt to rob Malawians of over K300 million in tax revenue.

This is not new. Under Peter Mutharika’s watch, parastatals were milked dry to fund party activities. Today, we see the same old script—different actors, same theatre of shame. They want to crawl back to power, but how can a nation return the keys to people who once looted the house and are now caught trying to sneak in through the backdoor?

Malawians must remember the proverb: “A leopard does not change its spots.” AFORD and DPP may wear new suits, but their crookedness shines through like daylight. Tax evasion is not just stealing from government—it is stealing from schools, hospitals, roads, and the poor farmer waiting for subsidised fertilizer.

The writing is on the wall: never again should such parties be trusted with power. They left a trail of rot and shame, and this latest scandal shows they are still the same hyenas circling the kraal.
