The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) led by Gift Trapence is calling on opposition political parties, particularly the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), to reassess their approach in providing essential checks and balances within Malawi’s political landscape.
In the wake of utterances by DPP officials advocating for violence, the rights and governance coalition outfit has emphasized on the need for the DPP to engage in issue-based campaigning while avoiding hate speech and political savagery.
In a recent statement signed by senior officials, the HRDC stated: “The DPP should package their campaign messages in a manner that advances issue-based initiatives, promotes peace, unity, tolerance, and provides tangible solutions to the challenges facing our country.”
The organization believes that fostering a peaceful and inclusive campaigning environment is crucial for the health of Malawi’s democracy.
“As part of its mandate, the HRDC will actively monitor political activities leading up to the upcoming elections and advocate for the protection of human rights for all citizens”, reads the statement, insisting that political parties have a responsibility to contribute positively to the democratic process, urging opposition members to operate in a manner that reflects these values.
In a more positive light, the HRDC commended the government for its proactive measures to address the ongoing fuel shortage crisis. The administration’s announcement to procure 40,000 metric tons of diesel and petrol through a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement with the United Arab Emirates has been recognized as a significant step forward.
The HRDC also praised the government’s commitment to infrastructure development projects, including the rehabilitation and construction of roads, which are expected to boost the country’s economic growth and improve public services.
