Pres. Chakwera hails Malawi vs USA bilateral relations

The sixth President of the Republic of Malawi, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera

Despite recent criticisms from many Malawians regarding the U.S. State Department’s condemnation of four Malawians suspected of corruption, the bilateral relationship between Malawi and the United States appears to be thriving.

During the signing ceremony of the State Partnership Programme between the Malawi Defence Force and the North Carolina National Guard, President Lazarus Chakwera emphasized that this partnership represents a significant deepening of ties between the two nations.

President Chakwera highlighted several areas of cooperation between Malawi and the United States, including public health initiatives, infrastructural development projects, educational initiatives, disaster management efforts, governance support, economic collaboration, and diplomatic alignment. These cooperative endeavors demonstrate the breadth and depth of the relationship between the two countries.

Furthermore, President Chakwera underscored the importance of open and respectful dialogue between Malawi and the United States. He expressed gratitude for the candid discussions and mutual respect demonstrated by both nations, emphasizing the value of constructive criticism and collaboration in addressing challenges and fostering improvement.

Said Chakwera:

“You can tell that the relationship between Malawi and the United States is growing because we speak candidly to each other and treat each other with mutual respect. I am grateful that whenever Malawi has faced challenges, I have been able to count on the United States to speak candidly and respectfully to me and my officials, and I am grateful that they have allowed us to enjoy the same privilege when we have concerns to raise. There is no nation on earth that is perfect, and so it is to our advantage that Malawi has friends like the United States who have a vested interest in our improvement, and for this I am most grateful.”

Moreover, President Chakwera emphasized the significance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening the bond between Malawi and the United States. He highlighted the increasing number of Americans visiting Malawi and the removal of tourist visa fees for American tourists, as well as the growing presence of Malawians in the United States. These exchanges contribute to a deeper understanding of each other’s cultures and lifestyles, enriching the bilateral relationship.

In conclusion, President Chakwera expressed profound gratitude to the Government of the United States and the Governor of North Carolina for their commitment to sustaining and enhancing the relationship between Malawi and the United States. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and partnership in advancing shared goals and mutual interests.
