All set for Tanzania Union Day celebrations: Malawi’s VP Chilima to Attend

Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima, is slated to participate in the 60th commemoration of Union Day between Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The event is scheduled to take place at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Friday.

These annual celebrations mark the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania, following the exchange of articles of union between the Republic of Tanganyika and the Peoples Republic of Zanzibar on April 22, 1964. This historic merger officially united the two sovereign states into one nation on April 26, 1964, under the leadership of President Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, the head of the Revolutionary Government in Zanzibar.

Dr. Chilima is expected to arrive in Tanzania on Thursday to partake in the festivities, which symbolize unity, solidarity, shared struggle, and collective vision among the people of the erstwhile separate states.

The commemorations will be presided over by the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, and are anticipated to draw the attendance of Heads of State and dignitaries from various African countries, including Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, South Africa, and others. Preparations are currently in full swing for this momentous occasion in Tanzania’s calendar.
