Karonga By-elections Tomorrow: MEC Ferries Election Materials by Ox-Cart

MEC ferrying staff and election materials

The Malawi Electoral Commission has confirmed that elections will proceed as planned in all 87 polling stations across Rukuru, Chilanga, and Kaporo Wards in Karonga tomorrow. Despite facing challenges due to rain, the MEC has successfully deployed staff and materials to each of the designated polling stations.

Polling kicks off at the crack of dawn, commencing at 6 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

However, beneath the surface of this electoral fervor lies a stark reality. A striking image portrays neglected landscapes, devoid of even the most basic infrastructure, such as bridges. This begs the question: why should citizens cast their votes when essential amenities remain absent?

The sight of election materials being transported via ox-cart, due to impassable terrain, lays bare the inherent shortcomings of the electoral ritual. It exposes a harsh truth: that the act of voting, intended to usher in progress and development, risks being reduced to a mere formality. Instead of empowering communities and fostering change, it appears that voters are being compelled to participate in a system that fails to address their fundamental needs.
