2025 SONA: Chakwera speaks to the people of Nsanje district

 

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has assured the people of Nsanje that the government will continue supporting the district’s development.

He highlighted that government has already reached 5,028 beneficiaries with the Affordable Input Programme farm inputs worth K195 million.

Furthermore, the government has allocated K3.9 billion kwacha worth of food to 36,004 households and provided social cash transfers to an additional 7,074 households.

President Chakwera also emphasised that his administration has distributed climate-smart cash to 20,423 beneficiaries and provided cash transfers to families affected by Cyclone Freddy, reaching another 51,508 individuals.

In terms of economic development, President Chakwera said the government has disbursed K2 billion kwacha in loans to 2,438 people in Nsanje, helping them start businesses and improve access to finance for 608 micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Additionally, the government has connected 100 households to electricity, enhancing access to energy for the people of the district.

Regarding human capital development, the President announced the construction of a new school, 29 new classrooms, and the recruitment of 231 primary school teachers.

He also highlighted the completion of the Tengani Community College, which is currently being furnished to provide higher education opportunities.

On infrastructure development, Chakwera said that government has built 28 houses for security agencies in the district to improve security.

President Chakwera noted that his administration has revived the railway system in Nsanje, bringing cargo from Mozambique for the first time in 41 years. This revitalisation will help reduce the cost of goods over time and provide opportunities for exporting Malawian products through the rail link to Mozambique.

The President stated that Nsanje will become a major player in the country’s economy over the next decade.

He pointed out that the district’s strategic location will make it a hub for commodities like fertilizer and other goods, which will require the construction of world-class storage facilities and other supporting infrastructure.
