To Whom It May Concern,
It is time to clarify and remind those positioning themselves—either directly or indirectly—for the coveted role of running mate to Dr. Lazarus Chakwera in the upcoming election. Let us revisit the facts, not just out of political strategy but for the benefit of all who may be caught up in the whirlwind of ambition.
The Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) constitution is unequivocal. It clearly grants the President the prerogative to select any individual as his running mate. This prerogative, granted to the President of the MCP, mirrors the same authority vested in the Head of State by the Malawi Constitution to appoint anyone as a Minister. What this signifies is simple: President Chakwera is under no legal obligation to appoint a particular individual as his running mate. The field is wide open.
This should be a point of clarity for all those eagerly vying for this position. The President has the full discretion to choose a running mate either from within the MCP’s ranks or, indeed, from outside the party altogether. It is his prerogative—this cannot be overstated.
So, the real question is: why this frenzied battle for a position governed by discretion? In an election process driven by the 50% plus one vote rule, it is entirely possible that a future election partner might negotiate to secure the running mate spot. What does that make of all the political maneuvering and positioning happening now? A potential exercise in futility.
Let us not forget the deeper, spiritual truth—the person destined by God for this position will occupy it, regardless of who is currently fighting for it. It is time for all to focus on the greater mission: securing the victory in the upcoming election. A running mate is a single position, held by one person, at any given time.
The true focus should be on the bigger picture—the success of the party, the triumph of the collective, and ultimately, the empowerment of the people. Let the future unfold as it will, but for now, let us rally behind the cause of victory, rather than chase a title that, ultimately, one will occupy only temporarily.
Let wisdom guide your actions.
