In a statement released by Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lusaka said it had been left with “no choice” but to cancel the agreement after Malawi repeatedly failed to honor its payment obligations.
The move has sparked outrage at home, with critics accusing the DPP government of embarrassing the nation and damaging Malawi’s reputation in the region.
“This is a shameful moment. Malawi now looks broke and untrustworthy,” said one commentator, adding that Zambia could even sue for damages if it chose to.
Observers say the development paints a worrying picture of Malawi’s financial stability and international credibility. “The DPP is turning Malawi into a laughing stock,” another critic said.
Zambia, meanwhile, said it would now focus on its domestic food security and look for new markets for its surplus maize.
