Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Sidik Mia, on Tuesday received a donation of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) materials valued at approximately 4.5 million US dollars from UNICEF, supplies which were supported by the Canadian Government.
Back in May 2023, the Ministry and UNICEF collaborated as Co-Leads and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the contribution of various WASH supplies. The received items, totalling over 4.5 million USD, encompass tents, water testing kits, Chlorine, Water Guard, reusable sanitary towels, handwashing buckets, and soap. These will be allocated to Health Centers, Schools, and other public areas.
During the handover event, Mr. Shadrack Omol, UNICEF’s Representative in Malawi, commended the Canadian Government for their generous donation, recognizing it as a significant stride in the country’s efforts to prevent waterborne diseases. He also reassured the Minister of UNICEF’s enduring assistance regarding WASH initiatives in the nation.
“The partnership that exists between UNICEF and the Ministry of Water and Sanitation is made possible because of the Ministry’s policy direction and commitment, and such generosity from donor partners, such as the people of Canada, cements our collective efforts to serve the people” said Omol
On her part, the Minister applauded UNICEF and the Canadian Government for the timely donation of the WASH supplies to be used in the prevention of waterborne diseases. She further reassured the Donor community of Government’s commitment to the fight against waterborne diseases including cholera.
“The Malawi Government is committed to prevent and control the cholera outbreak. This is demonstrated by the relationships that the Government is building with partners like UNICEF” said Mia
