Vuwa Kaunda, the outspoken Member of Parliament representing Nkhata-Bay Central Constituency, has shockingly confessed to his involvement in a treasonous plot aimed at replacing Joyce Banda with Peter Mutharika following the death of President Bingu Wa Mutharika in 2012.
Speaking boldly during the Martyr’s Day Service of Worship led by President Lazarus Chakwera in Nkhatabay, Kaunda publicly acknowledged their clandestine meetings, which were abruptly halted by law enforcement authorities who alerted them to the gravity of their actions.
Reflecting on those tumultuous times, Kaunda vividly recounted the tense moments spent in confinement alongside Leader of the Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa, Bright Msaka, Henry Mussa, Patricia Kaliati and others, underscoring the seriousness of their intentions. Despite their failed attempt and subsequent detention at Lumbadzi Police Station when Joyce Banda ascended to power in 2012, their charges were ultimately dropped with the rise of Peter Mutharika to power in 2014.
In a cautionary tone, Kaunda has warned fellow opposition members against engaging in similar illicit schemes, warning them of the formidable force of government machinery.
Turning to President Chakwera, Vuwa commended him for his inclusive governance approach, citing the appointment of several officials from the northern region as evidence of his fairness. Kaunda also lauded the Chakwera administration’s developmental strides, affirming his belief in the President’s vision for national progress.
