In a striking turn of events, once a vociferous antagonist of the late Bingu Wa Mutharika’s administration, Undule Mwakasungula, has unleashed scathing rebuke upon former President Peter Mutharika, casting a shadow of doubt upon his audacious return to the political arena.
Mwakasungula’s impassioned sentiments reverberated through the corridors of discourse, encapsulated in a poignant statement crafted in response to Mutharika’s resolute determination to helm his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the forthcoming September 2025 electoral showdown.
He said: “While he [Mutharika] may believe that his leadership is necessary, concerns about his age, wellbeing, past indecisive record compounded by so many other challenges to the nation cannot be ignored.
“It is imperative, therefore, for Mutharika to reflect on whether his candidacy aligns with the best interests of Malawians, and to consider the potential consequences of his return to power.”
Mwakasungula emphasized that Mutharika must recognize that life extends beyond the presidency, advocating for diverse avenues through which one can positively impact Malawi even outside official governmental roles.
Meanwhile, addressing reporters at his luxurious coastal abode on Friday, Mutharika articulated that his resolve to contest in the elections stemmed from what he perceives as the profound hardships endured by Malawians under President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration.
