The future of Malawi belongs to peace & unity not bloodshed & chaos

Not long ago, Malawians delivered a resounding judgement against Peter Mutharika’s government. The nation was slipping deep into a failed state under a leader who had lost control. In reality, the country was being run by bodyguards, wife, criminal elements, and individuals ill-suited for governance as the aging Peter Mutharika was busy sleeping and doing everything else biology could permit a sleeping body to do.

What angered Malawians the most was the government’s inaction as people with albinism were hunted down like animals, butchered, and their bodies mutilated. The sheer brutality of these acts horrified the nation, yet Peter Mutharika and his administration failed to act, raising suspicions that the regime may have had knowledge of these ritual killings.

Malawians reached their limit with this horror under Mutharika’s rule. In 2020, they decisively removed Mutharika and his DPP from power. Unfortunately, today, the same dark forces from the opposition DPP have resurfaced. Their agents, known as cadets, are now intimidating and attacking members of the ruling MCP, stoning them, hacking them with pangas, damaging property and resorting to violence in the hopes of regaining power this September. But they must be reminded that these tactics are long-tried and tested – they result into failure.

History shows that when they (DPP) engaged in ritual killings of people with Albinism, it led to their downfall. They lost power. Now, as they resort once again to violence, they are ensuring their continued exile in opposition. Violence has no place in a democratic Malawi, and those who sow discord will not rise but remain defeated. The future of our nation belongs to peace, unity, and democratic principles, not bloodshed and chaos.

We sympathize with all those who were attacked at Nselema in Machinga by the DPP hoodlums and we hope the long arm of the law with catch the perpetrators of these heinous crimes and bring them to justice.
