June has been an incredibly tough month for Malawians. The loss of the legendary lawyer Raphael Kasambara was just the beginning of a tragic series of events. Shortly after, a plane crash in Chikangawa claimed the lives of Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other officials who were en route to Nkhatabay for Kasambara’s burial.
Today, the nation mourns yet again with the passing of the legendary musician Lucius Banda. Sam Simakweli, a member of the Zembani Band, confirmed the news but was too emotional to provide further details during a phone interview. Lucius Banda, affectionately known as ‘Soldier,’ began his music career in the early 1990s and released 20 albums, advocating for the rights and betterment of the poor through his powerful music.
