In a surprising turn of events, the UTM has boldly announced dates for its upcoming convention, only for it to emerge that the party lacks one crucial element—delegates! Malawians are baffled, as it appears the party has no structures across the country, aside from a few vocal supporters on Facebook.
A disgruntled contestant expressed frustration, saying, “There are no delegates for us to campaign to, and this is causing panic among those seriously vying for positions.” He further challenged the Secretary General to release the names of the supposed delegates, so contestants can begin their campaigns in earnest.
Once a party with a visionary leader in the late Saulos Chilima, UTM had captivated the nation with his bold ideas, earning him a respectable share of presidential votes. However, with his passing, the party seems to have lost its momentum. The current leadership lacks the influence to revive the movement, with even party stalwarts like Secretary General Patricia Kaliati struggling to maintain support. Kaliati herself failed to secure re-election in her own constituency, casting doubt on the party’s future.
Without strong leadership and grassroots support, UTM’s convention announcement may prove more symbolic than substantive.
