There was a time not long ago when buying sugar felt like buying gold. Shelves were empty. Prices were too high. Many Malawians could not afford even a small packet. But now, things are back to normal — thanks to strong leadership from President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.
As people often say, real leadership shows up when there is a problem.
The sugar problem was not just about business. It was created on purpose. Some greedy traders, helped by certain politicians from the opposition, kept sugar in hidden places and sold it at very high prices. They wanted people to suffer so that they would blame the government and lose trust in President Chakwera.
But their plan failed.
President Chakwera stood up and took action. He told the authorities to investigate those keeping sugar in secret and punishing those breaking the law. He stopped the greedy people from taking advantage of ordinary Malawians.
Because of this, sugar prices have gone down. Shops now have enough sugar, and people can buy it again at fair prices. What was meant to embarrass the President has now shown how strong and serious he is.
This was more than just sugar — it was a test of leadership. And Chakwera passed that test.
As one woman at the market in Blantyre said, “This is the real leader. Others are like wind, but he is like maize that grows even in hard soil.”
Indeed, in a country where many leaders only make noise, President Chakwera has once again shown that he works.
