President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has announced that during his recent trip to China, he successfully secured a market for 10 million kilograms of burley and flue-cured tobacco. This is great news for Malawian tobacco farmers, as they will now be able to benefit from their hard work.

President Chakwera returned to Malawi on July 3rd, 2023, after attending the Third China-Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation (CAETE) Forum. He shared the exciting update with Malawians through his official Facebook page, emphasizing that this new economic opportunity will serve as a significant incentive for the farmers in the country.

During his visit to China, President Chakwera also strengthened cooperation between the two nations through discussions with Chinese government officials and the signing of several memoranda of understanding with Huawei Technologies. These agreements focused on various areas such as renewable energy, broadband connectivity, e-government, smart education, and ICT talent training.

Furthermore, on the economic front, President Chakwera continued negotiations with multilateral creditors and successfully lobbied China to ease the burden of debt that has been affecting the country’s economic prospects. He expressed hope that these ongoing discussions will eventually lead to positive outcomes, including a new economic program with the International Monetary Fund.
