Chiradzulu — President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera delivered a moving address today during the annual commemoration of Chilembwe Day at the Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) in Chiradzulu, emphasizing the need for unity among all Malawians in the pursuit of national development and collective prosperity.
Reflecting on the legacy of the late Rev. John Chilembwe, the President underscored that the themes of liberation and finding rest resonate deeply within the context of Malawi’s pressing challenges today. He reminded the gathering that these issues have persisted since the time of Chilembwe, who championed spiritual and social emancipation.
“We gather today not just to remember a great leader, but to reflect on the principles he stood for—principles that urge us to work together for our common good,” Chakwera said. He highlighted the interconnectedness of the nation, stressing that the challenges faced by one region affect all Malawians, regardless of geographical boundaries.
In his address, the President reiterated the importance of the terms chosen by Rev. Chilembwe for his church—Providence, Industrial, and Mission. Chakwera explained that these words encapsulate the essence of what it means to strive for national progress through collective efforts. “By choosing Providence, Rev. Chilembwe recognized that our country is rich in natural resources and potential. We are blessed as a nation, and our progress lies in the responsible use of these gifts,” he noted.
Chakwera also revealed plans for the establishment of a Chilembwe School of Excellence in Chiradzulu, aimed at empowering the youth with education and skills necessary for economic advancement. This initiative is part of a broader national agenda to build Schools of Excellence across the country, an effort to harness local resources for regional development.
“Education is the key to our development,” he said. “It will enable us to use what we have been given by God’s providence effectively. We must prepare our youth to contribute to the industrialization and growth of our nation.”
Highlighting the significance of industry, the President emphasized that true economic growth would stem from Malawi’s ability to produce its goods and services for both domestic use and export. He called for a collective commitment among citizens to pursue industrial development as a pathway to achieving long-term stability and prosperity.
Chakwera concluded his remarks by urging all Malawians to join hands in addressing the critical issues facing the country, re-affirming that “we face these challenges together.” He stressed that through teamwork and collaboration, the nation can overcome its hurdles and achieve the rest and progress envisioned by Rev. Chilembwe.
The commemoration attracted numerous attendees, including government officials, religious leaders, and community members, all who expressed renewed hope for national unity and development in light of President Chakwera’s inspiring message.
