Malawi’s President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, called upon the nation to embrace the government’s development visions, which aim to transform the country into an economically self-reliant nation.
Speaking yesterday at Chadza Primary School Ground in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Chadza, during a development rally held after presiding over the 7th graduation ceremony at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Bunda campus, Chakwera emphasized the importance of identifying opportunities, particularly in the agriculture sector, through the establishment of large-scale farms across the country. This, he explained, will allow the nation to increase crop production for both domestic consumption and export.
President Chakwera expressed his government’s desire for the country to generate its resources through the commercialization of agriculture, enabling self-reliance and the ability to finance development programs without depending on borrowing.
“Let us work hard this year in our fields, as the fertilizer for Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) will be distributed on time to the beneficiaries.
“The achievement of food security from household level, is one of this government’s priorities. Dependency syndrome will not take us anywhere,” he said.
Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Msozi North, Sosten Gwengwe who is also Minister of Trade thanked the President for directing that the AIP fertilizer should be distributed to every corner of the country within 40 days after the programme was launched.
“I want to confirm Your Excellency that the fertilizer has already started trickling in several selling points here. And I don’t have any doubt, if we will have good rains this year, then next year we will have bumper maize harvest,” he said.
Secretary General for Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Eisenhower Mkaka said the multitude of people that are patronising MCP rallies across the country is a living testimony that the people are impressed with Chakwera’s leadership.
Mkaka said Chakwera has demonstrated that he is a president for the whole country by distributing development programmes such as the construction of roads regardless of region, tribe or race.
During the rally, several people from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were announced to have defected from the party and joined MCP.
