Persistent Turmoil in DPP: Calls for Discipline of Regional Governors Amid Allegations of Democratic Violations

In a sharp rebuke of recent actions by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials, a scathing letter has been addressed to the Administrative Assistant at the DPP National Secretariat in Naperi, Blantyre, demanding the disciplining of several high-ranking party members.

The letter, written by Kenneth Lawson Bwanali, strongly denounces the “autocratic maneuver” orchestrated by perceived Honourables Alfred Gangata, Hon. Jap Mhango, Hon. Chimwemwe Chipungu, Hon. Mary Navicha, Hon. Chipiliro Mpinganjira, Hon. Dr. Mwale, and Hon. Dr. Jean Manthanga.

Bwanali claims their directive, issued just days prior to the upcoming DPP convention, which mandated DPP regional governors to campaign with a preordained list of candidates, is a “gross violation of democratic principles and ethics.”

The letter further asserts that this move not only “erodes the foundational pillars of democracy” but also “signifies a deplorable descent into authoritarianism.”

The multilateral communique further calls for “immediate and resolute measures to redress this transgression” and urges President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to “expeditiously discipline these individuals” and ensure their suspension from party responsibilities until the conclusion of the convention.

Bwanali emphasizes that the “function of regional governors within the convention should be to foster an equitable and open environment, enabling all contenders to campaign equitably within their regions.”

He argues that “delegates’ autonomy in selecting candidates based on competence and commitment to the party should be safeguarded without prejudice.”

The letter concludes by expressing faith that the President will “promptly and decisively address this matter, fostering a climate that upholds democratic values and equity within the party.”

The unfolding situation underscores the tensions and divisions within the DPP as the party prepares for its crucial convention.
