Quasi-religious grouping, Public Affairs Committee, says President Lazarus Chakwera deserves a pat on the back for initiating a host of road projects both in the capital city, Lilongwe, and across the country.
PAC leadership said this on Monday during an interface with the Malawi leader at Kamuzu Palace.
“Your Excellency, as we drive in the city one realizes how Lilongwe has been transformed. The quality of the road construction we witness today is amazing. For some time we have been waiting for such type of road infrastructure. Lilongwe has become a source of pride. This is excellent work. It is also true for other roads constructed under your leadership,” says the prepared statement read on the day.
The Chakwera-led government has in the past four years undertaken many road projects across the country both as continuing projects or new initiatives altogether.
The transformation of Lilongwe has seen the construction of dual carriageways, four and six lanes, across the city. These include the six-lane Kenyatta Drive from Parliament Building to Old Town, four-lane Mzimba Street from Crossroads Roundabout to Mchesi Township, four-lane Kanengo to Old Town street.
Also under construction is the Gateway Mall to Kanengo four-lane road which is aimed at sorting out traffic congestion on the western side of the city.
Another landmark road project that cuts across a number of districts is the M1 Road reconstruction which covers a distance of 302 kilometres from Lilongwe to Karonga, making is the largest single road project since Malawi attained independence.
Another inter-regional roadway under construction is the M5 Road from Balaka to Nkhotakota via Dedza and Salima.
In the Northern Region, notable projects include the Mzuzu NOCMA to Dunduzu bypass road; the Rumphi-Nyika road, Mzimba-Mzalangwe road, the 32-kilometre Ilomba – Chitipa Road.
In the eastern and southern regions, the road projects include the Zomba dual carriageway, Newlands -Manje via Chiwembe Road, Lali Lubani Road across Masauko Chipembere highway via Malawi Polytechnic Village-Kenyatta drive, Namiwawa-Sunnyside (Bank road and Smythe road, Chipatala Avenue – Kamba Road, Ndirande – Nkolokoti (Makheta) Road, North Road – Limbe Market Street Road, Mahatma Ghandi- Kapeni Road expansion and Stella Marris – Chilobwe By-Pass Road among others.
PAC has also praised the President for his tolerance to alternative views at all times.
“Your Excellency, we would like also to express our appreciation over your tolerance even in most difficult times. We have noted open insults targeted at you and yet your composure has remained steadfast. We may safely state it is God’s intervention for you to assume office, as we face the world’s economic challenges and national disasters that confront us. We have witnessed your efforts at different trying times. Coming from our fraternity, we are proud of you. These are unique virtues as stated last time we met here in this Boardroom.” Says PAC.
