MCP Urges Calm After Reports of Irregular Vote Totals in the South

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has called on its supporters to remain calm and avoid panic following reports of inflated vote figures in parts of the Southern Region.

In a statement posted on social media, the party cited concerns from Chikwawa, Mulanje and Phalombe, where election observers raised questions about inconsistencies in some tallies. In one case, a polling station in Chikwawa with about 27,000 registered voters was reported to have produced 32,000 votes. According to the MCP, the District Commissioner “raised the alarm and ordered a review.”

“Reports of Inflated Votes in the South — Stay Calm, Wait for the Facts,” the statement read. “We have our own parallel voter tabulation from monitors across the country and the picture is clear: MCP is in a strong position. But data must be confirmed by MEC and the official process. Don’t spread rumours. Don’t cheer or call for violence.”

The party urged Malawians to remain patient as results trickle in, pointing out that official figures from heavily registered districts like Lilongwe Rural are still to be announced. “The final picture will only be clear when official and verified figures come in. Until then, remain calm, watchful, and lawful. MCP believes in the vote. MCP believes in peace. Let the process run its course.”

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has yet to comment on the reported discrepancies, but has previously said all irregularities would be addressed through established procedures.
