In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing the operational effectiveness of its youth in public discourse, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), through its International Affairs Directorate headed by Chalo Mvula, has recently benefited from a two-day capacity building training program sponsored by the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party. The event took place on February 6 and 7, 2023, at the Umodzi Park Hotel, a notable venue in the heart of Lilongwe.
The training was made possible through the support of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), a UK public body dedicated to strengthening democracy around the world.
The program focused on strengthening the skills of over 30 participants from the MCP media team, who are tasked with critical communication roles within the party. MCP officials responsible for media and public relations described the initiative as one that underscores the increasing international collaboration in political development.
Among the trainers were some of the Conservative Party’s top media strategists, including Natasha Solomon, the Head of Media; Chris Scott, the Director of Insights and Voter Communication; and Robbie Caprari-Sharpe, the Head of Broadcast. Their collective expertise provided invaluable insights into contemporary media strategies, voter engagement techniques, and effective communication practices that are crucial in today’s fast-paced political environment.
At the conclusion of the training, President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera hosted a reception at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, honoring both the participants and the visiting trainers.
“The event underscored the strong relationship building between the MCP and its international partners, setting a precedent for future collaborations designed to enhance the capacities of political institutions in Malawi”, said Jessie Kabwira, MCP’s spokesperson, during sideline interviews at the State House.
Hon. Patricia Kainga Nangozo, Hon. Edgar Chipalanjira, and Chalo Mvula from the MCP International Affairs team expressed their gratitude towards the Conservative Party for this generous support, emphasizing the importance of international partnerships in developing local political capabilities.
