The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, who passed away early this morning at the age of 88, marking the end of a historic papacy defined by humility, reform, and compassion.
In a solemn statement signed by MCCB President, Right Reverend Bishop Martin Annel Mtumbuka, the local Catholic leadership has called on the faithful across Malawi to gather in unity and prayer for the repose of the Holy Father’s soul. The bishops are also encouraging the offering of Holy Masses in memory of the late pontiff, whose global influence touched millions.
“The passing of Pope Francis is a profound loss not only for the universal Church, but also for humanity,” the statement reads in part.
Known for his simplicity, strong moral voice, and commitment to social justice, Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became the first Jesuit Pope and the first from Latin America. His death has left the Church in mourning, while also sparking reflections on his powerful legacy of spiritual leadership and service to the marginalized.
Funeral arrangements, according to the Vatican, will be announced in due course. The Catholic Church has now entered a traditional nine-day mourning period, as preparations begin for the next phase in its centuries-old tradition of succession.
The MCCB has urged all Catholics and people of goodwill in Malawi to keep the Church and the global Catholic community in their prayers during this time of sorrow.
