Malawi President Chakwera Meets Chiefs for Talks on Rural Development

Lazarus Chakwera

Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera met with traditional leaders from Lilongwe East at Kamuzu Palace on Thursday to discuss ways to accelerate development in rural communities. The chiefs, led by Senior Chief Tsabango, were joined by Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda and other senior government officials. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between government and traditional leaders to improve grassroots development.

President Chakwera told the gathering that his administration values the role of chiefs and will continue working closely with them. He described chiefs as important partners who help deliver development where it is most needed.

“Chiefs are not just cultural figures—they are leaders who help drive progress in our communities,” he said.

Minister Chimwendo Banda praised the President for increasing monthly allowances for chiefs, calling it a sign of his respect and concern for their wellbeing.

During the meeting, former DPP Secretary General Grezelda Jeffrey, now with the ruling MCP, urged the chiefs to support President Chakwera’s leadership. She said he had brought positive changes despite economic challenges.

MP Eisenhower Mkaka also encouraged the chiefs to mobilize support for the President in future elections.

Senior Chief Tsabango thanked Chakwera for meeting the traditional leaders and expressed support for his continued leadership. The meeting highlighted the government’s commitment to working with traditional structures to bring development to Malawi’s rural areas.
