President Lazarus Chakwera has said Chilembwe Day is a day of reflection on the sacrificial gift that the fallen hero presented to the nation. Chakwera said Chilembwe loved the country and put aside his personal interests to die fighting for his nation.
The president said Malawians should emulate Chilembwe’s shining example by sacrificing themselves for the sake of the country.
The Malawi leader said this at Providence Industrial Mission in Chiradzulu where he presided over Chilembwe Day commemorations.
Chakwera, for instance, commended health practitioners who he said are always there to provide healthcare to Malawians.
The Malawi leader also announced that from today onwards, Phalombe Hospital will be called John Chilembwe Hospital in honour of the fallen hero.

“For yet another year, we gathered at Mbombwe Mission of the Providence Industrial Mission to commemorate the country’s pioneering freedom fighter, Reverend John Chilembwe, whose brave acts paved way for emancipation of natives.
“To this day, Reverend Chilembwe remains an indelible symbol of national sacrifice and patriotism. May his martyrdom be a mirror from which today’s Malawi should shape its development aspirations.
“I have since renamed Phalombe District Hospital to John Chilembwe Hospital as way of fully entrenching his name in the affairs of Malawi for generations to come,” said Chakwera.
