Malawi Pres. Chakwera Commends Kamuzu Banda’s Beacon of Inspiration, African Methodist Episcopal Church: Centenary Celebrations.

Chakwera

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday commended the African Methodist Episcopal Church for its pivotal role in the country’s fight for freedom, particularly its advisory support to Kamuzu Banda in opposing the colonial federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The President made these remarks during the church’s centenary celebrations at Hannock Msokera Primary School in Kasungu.

During his speech, President Chakwera highlighted the church’s significant contribution to Kamuzu Banda’s journey, enabling him to study abroad and become a professional doctor, which was instrumental in the struggle against the federation.

“In 1974, the Ngwazi returned to this place to pay homage to the church and Reverend Hannock Msokera Phiri for their advisory role in fighting the federal government. Today, as we celebrate the church’s 100 years of existence, we are reminded that God remembers and supports those dedicated to building their nation, even amidst challenges,” said Chakwera.

The President urged Malawians to follow the example set by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which stood firm for the betterment of the nation despite oppression from federal leaders. He acknowledged that some Malawians seek to divide the nation or undermine government initiatives but emphasized the need for unity and collective effort in developing Malawi.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church, which began its mission in Malawi in 1924, now boasts a global membership of over three million.
