Malawi leader Chakwera holds bilateral talks with Chinese Pres. Xi Jinping

The Malawi President Dr Lazarus Chakwera who is in China attending the Summit of the Forum on China – Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has held bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping, this being a follow up of two previous discussions in 2021 and last year.

Said the President:

“I have expressed strong desire to ensure that deliberations on economic production, modernisation, industrialisation & infrastructural development lead to speedy implementation, now that the bilateral ties are earmarked for elevation to a strategic partnership.”

He added;

“As we approach the 17th anniversary of our diplomatic ties, Malawi looks forward to shared prosperity via the Belt & Road Initiative, an infrastructure program that promises huge economic impact in the Global South, when factored into the African Continental Free Trade Area structure.

“Some projects I have made President Xi aware of as eligible for the Belt and Road Initiative include the improvement of the Rumphi-Nyika-Chitipa-Ilomba Road & rehabilitation & expansion of railway lines, both of which would boost connectivity between Malawi, Zambia & Tanzania.”

On his part, President Xi Jinping pledged to make the FOCAC summit memorable and fruitful for Malawi so that the 17th anniversary of our ties usher in a new era of sustainable development.
