Malawi Lawyers resolve to stage massive protests to push for judicial transparency

Malawi Law Society

Malawi lawyers are gearing up for a showdown with the Judiciary, as they refuse to tolerate the perceived air of invincibility surrounding judicial officials. Frustrated by what they see as a lack of transparency and accountability in the appointment, transfer, discipline, and removal of judges, they are preparing to take to the streets in protest.

The Malawi Law Society has long decried the opacity surrounding the appointment of judges, arguing that it breeds injustice and undermines public trust in the judiciary. Now, they are intensifying their efforts to push for change, with the aim of ushering in a new era of transparency and accountability within the judicial system.

At the heart of their campaign is the Judicial Service Administration Bill 2023, which they are demanding be fast-tracked for consideration in the upcoming parliamentary session. They see this bill as a crucial step towards reforming the judiciary and restoring public confidence in its integrity.

The lawyers are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for change, vowing to employ all available means, both within the bounds of the law and beyond, to achieve their objectives. They view demonstrations as a potent weapon in their arsenal, hoping that the specter of public unrest will compel authorities to take swift action on their demands.
