Malawi Government Shuts the Door on Chizuma: No Contract Renewal as Tenure Ends Friday

Martha Chizuma

The tenure of Anti-Corruption Bureau Director Martha Chizuma ends this Friday, marking the conclusion of her contract. Despite her alleged request to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) for an extension, she received a decisive rejection.

Chizuma’s tenure has been marred by controversy, with many viewing her as ineffective and questioning her professionalism due to a significant breach of her oath of office when she leaked confidential information to a third party.

In a widely publicized audio recording, Chizuma discussed with an unknown individual how certain judges, lawyers, and government officials were allegedly obstructing her efforts to tackle corruption cases involving British-based businessman Zuneth Sattar.

Her actions led to serious diplomatic tensions with the United States, initially supported by then-Ambassador David Young. However, Young eventually recognized that Chizuma’s efforts to fight corruption were largely unproductive and left Malawi a disgruntled fella.
