Malawi Deputy Police Chief Mkandawire for renewed fight against corruption

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) responsible for administration Happy Mkandawire has called for fresh efforts in the fight against corruption in the Malawi Police Service (MPS).

Mkandawire made the stance when he addressed senior and junior police officers at the Northern Region Police Headquarters Officer’s Mess on 10 February 2023 during an Institutional Integrity Committee (IIC) meeting.

According to him, IIC was set up by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) to promote a culture of integrity among Public Servants in the country at  Ministry, Department and Agency/Institutional level.
It is also responsible for organizing functions/activities aimed at corruption prevention.

Said Mkandawire; “I am here today to ensure we encourage activities towards corruption prevention and that’s why we need to reconstitute the ICC”.

He added that the MPS has embarked on efforts to ensure everything is being done towards fighting corruption of which the organization has recently been rated highly by various research institutions.

“This committee will help us take stock of what is being done in dealing with corruption within ourselves”, he emphasized.

“If you escaped free yesterday, don’t expect you will not be caught tomorrow, please stop corruption”, cautioned the DIG.

On her part, Commissioner of Police for Northern Region Rhoda Manjolo said her region is currently working on ensuring that public trust is restored.

She said a lot of community engagement meetings are being employed through community policing services in all districts across the region.

All regional heads of branches, Officers In-Charge, Community policing Coordinators and Public Relations officers attended the meeting among others.
