Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Davie Chilonga, has hailed the outcome of a crucial meeting with Kasasire community members in Traditional Authority (TA) M’bwana, Nkhata Bay, addressing land disputes with the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) over shooting range boundaries. Chilonga described the meeting as “impressive,” emphasizing that the community is now well-informed about the legal boundaries established in 1963.
The meeting, which followed the eviction of some residents allegedly encroaching on MDF land, focused on raising awareness of the boundary and finding solutions for those affected. Chilonga confirmed that the government is working with local leaders and stakeholders to facilitate the relocation process, ensuring fairness and screening for those impacted. Additionally, the government has mobilized resources for a survey to prevent further encroachment on the 17,712-hectare MDF land. MDF Commander Valentino Phiri reiterated the importance of protecting both the community and military personnel from potential harm due to the weapons used at the firing range. Traditional leaders, including TA M’bwana, expressed gratitude for the government’s timely intervention and ongoing support for the displaced people.
