Kamuzu Palace, Lilongwe — First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera has urged all Malawians to make the welfare of children—particularly those who are vulnerable and living on the streets—a national priority, saying the future of the country depends on how well it invests in its youngest citizens.
Speaking at a commemoration of the International Day for Street Connected Children held at Kamuzu Palace, the First Lady described children as “a hope for the nation,” calling on citizens, institutions, and development partners to play a proactive role in protecting and including every child.
“If we want a better Malawi for tomorrow, we must invest in our children today,” she said. “Let us not just protect children, but include them.”
Through her Shaping Our Future Foundation, Madam Chakwera has been championing efforts to uplift the lives of vulnerable children across Malawi. She reiterated her commitment to this cause, highlighting the Foundation’s mission to bring hope and opportunity to every child, regardless of background.
The First Lady also commended the efforts of government ministries, agencies, civil society organizations, churches, and development partners for their continued advocacy for children’s rights and the creation of safer, more inclusive spaces.
“This is not a task for one person or one institution,” she said. “It takes all of us—united in compassion and action—to make a lasting difference in the lives of these children.”
The event brought together stakeholders from across sectors, all pledging to strengthen collaboration in addressing the challenges facing street-connected children and ensuring that no child is left behind.
